We finally got around to watching Madagascar 2 last night. If you liked the first one, you might like the second one. It contains a lot of the same jokes. It’s attempt at playing off of Disney’s lion movie comes off as bloated parody by second rate actors, sort of a cartoon version of dinner theater. I wouldn’t recommend it except for one thing… okay make that four things. The penguins. From the moment they take over the Dreamworks logo, I was giggling. Any time they are on screen, I am giggling. Their bits are funny. They aren’t on screen nearly enough to help the movie, but I do enjoy them. We even got the double DVD pack so we could watch The Penguins of Madagascar. So, I guess that’s next on the menu. So, quick note to Dreamworks: Hey guys! Drop the lion, hippo, zebra, giraffe and annoying lemurs. They were fine for one film, but you failed to do anything new with them. The penguins are the real stars!

Very bad news
This news is extremely depressing for me. Disney is already doing so much to destroy it’s legacy of wonderful animation and do away with traditional animation all together. Pixar was the bright new hope, understanding that stories need to be singular visions not made weak and unpalatable by committee. If they return to Disney, animation will continue down the slope of mediocrity. It’s so far from what Walt envisioned.
